What We Do

EndoTeen is an easy-to-understand platform that includes summaries on different reproductive conditions, new research in the field, and a thorough analysis of gender inequality in healthcare. This accessible platform can help women differentiate the stereotypical “pains of being a woman” from serious conditions by including all necessary information in one place. We give women the information that should be their right.

The Issues

Women’s health has been underresearched, underfunded, and mostly ignored since the beginning of time. The lack of medical research on women means that they also have a lack of treatment and resources. Here are a few fields where the lack of research has been especially harmful…

Published Research in Fertility and Sterility, a global peer reviewed journal, states that the diagnosis of Endometriosis is usually delayed by 8-10 years because of the misinterpretation of symptoms in adolescent girls. Because of the delay, millions of teen girls in America endure their pain without an explanation or a treatment.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America states that from puberty to the age of 50, women are twice as likely as men to have an anxiety order and more likely to have multiple mental health disorders. Furthermore, the CDC states that women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome are more likely to have depression and anxiety. But the connection between mental health and gender is still not fully understood.

We may think that science has uncovered everything about the female reproductive system. BUT IT HAS NOT. According to the CDC, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects 6-12% of woman in the US alone. But then why does science still not know how many women have PCOS and what the exact cause is?

According to the CDC’s HEAR HER Campaign, more than 700 woman die each year due to pregnancy and delivery related complications. However 2/3 of those deaths can be prevented if women know the warning signs. So why don’t women have access to the information that could save their lives?

Our Story

Sofie Muneer founded EndoTeen after witnessing the lack of information on women’s health first hand. At the age of 14, Sofie’s endometriosis was misdiagnosed as appendicitis, leading to a traumatic ER visit. When the doctors finally understood that she did not have appendicitis, they still could not make a definitive diagnosis on whether she had PCOS or endometriosis until she was much older. As a result, she vowed to discover why it was so hard for the doctors to understand her condition. However, she found more questions than answers.

Sofie aims to provide more information on women’s health through translating new research and advocating for even more in the field. She wants to conduct new studies about women’s health and support an interdisciplinary approach with AI and biology. Most importantly, she aspires to ensure that the information we find and the information we have is accessible to every and any woman.
